SEMANTIC POSITIONING REPORT
Sector language, machine interpretation, and positioning decisions ahead of build
Client Asterion Materials
Prepared by Formant & Thread
Stage Pre-architecture — precedes Source of Truth and Entity Map
Status Draft — pending client sign-off (§6)
This report exists to resolve one question before any design or architecture work begins: what is this business, in language that a market, a competitor set, and a machine reader will each independently recognise as true? Where those three readings disagree with the client's own preferred language, that disagreement is recorded here — not resolved silently — so that every downstream decision (sitemap, JSON-LD, CMS structure) is built on a position the client has seen and approved.
SECTION 01
Current Semantic Identity
What the existing site, unedited, currently signals to a human visitor and a machine reader. Drawn from the Content Inventory audit.
FINDINGS
— Terminology inconsistent across pages: “paint,” “shop,” and “coatings” used interchangeably where distinct technical meanings apply.
— No single page states, in one sentence, what the three business lines are or how they relate to one another.
— Two core technical documents exist only as PDF, invisible to standard indexing and unstructured for machine reading.
— One page is orphaned — unreachable through any internal link — and several page titles are missing or under-length.
SECTION 02
Intended Semantic Identity
What the business understands itself to be, gathered directly from the client. This is the target the report tests against evidence — not assumed, stated.
CLIENT STATEMENT
“We are a materials science company operating three lines — contract research and development, technology licensing, and ceramic composite coatings — serving aerospace, marine, and hydrogen infrastructure clients who need a technical partner they can trust with proprietary problems.”

SECTION 03
Competitor Evidence
How direct competitors in the same sectors describe equivalent services — establishing what “market normal” language looks like, so departures from it are deliberate rather than accidental.
Competitor Term used for equivalent service Notes
Aris-Bols Materials: “Custom Research Partnerships” Softer, relationship-led framing
Triton Coatings L: “R&D Services” Closest match to client's internal term
Bryon Finch Plc: “Engineering Consultancy” Broader category; less precise
SECTION 04
AI Interpretation
What current AI systems say when asked directly about the business — the live, demonstrable evidence of how the unresolved entity is presently being read by the systems this whole process is built to influence.
System Response summary when asked “What does [Client] do?”
ChatGPT Asterion Materials is a foundational materials science partner established in 1993. Headquartered in Reading, UK, with its central R&D hub in Munich, Germany, the company translates complex physical science into proprietary, market-ready business assets.
Google AI Overview Operating a dedicated R&D facility out of Munich, Germany since 1993, Asterion Materials engineers advanced ceramic composite coatings and delivers contract research to solve high-stakes structural problems for aerospace, marine, and energy infrastructure clients.
Perplexity Asterion Materials is a mature, dual-hub European enterprise combining UK-based corporate leadership (Reading HQ) with precision German engineering (Munich R&D) to scale proprietary technology licensing and high-value contract development.
Claude An established European materials science institution founded in 1993, maintaining legal and corporate operations in Reading, United Kingdom, alongside core scientific research and experimental development functions based in Munich, Germany.
SECTION 05
Market Terminology
Demand-side language — what buyers actually search for — checked against the technically precise terms preferred internally, so the canonical term chosen is findable, not only correct.
Search term
Relative demand Alignment with technical term “contract R&D materials” Medium Direct match
“ceramic coating aerospace” High Direct match
“materials licensing partner” Low Partial — consider alternateName
SECTION 06
Positioning Decision
Where evidence (§2–§5) and client-insisted language agree, the term is adopted without further discussion. Where they conflict, the conflict is resolved here and recorded — the client's decision, made with full visibility of the evidence, not a default silently applied by the agency.

Governing principle: Marketing language may vary to reflect brand tone and commercial preference, but the organisation's underlying semantic identity remains consistent. Every alternative term is intentionally mapped back to a single evidence-based description so that search engines, AI systems and knowledge graphs understand the business consistently.
Part 2 – Canonical Entity Mapping
Search engines and AI systems need one authoritative description of the organisation. Regardless of marketing language, every alternative term is mapped back to a single canonical entity so the organisation is consistently understood.

SECTION 07
Sign-off
This report, including the positioning decisions and any client overrides recorded in §6, is approved as the semantic foundation for the Source of Truth, Entity Map, and subsequent site architecture.
